Project : Butcombe Brewery
Butcombe Brewery is the largest new build brewery in the UK for the last 35 years, so we were proud to be contracted to provide the design, manufacture and installation of their malt handling system.
This system works over two floors. Large bags of malt are emptied into the two tonne capacity malt hopper manufactured by us in galvanised steel plate. Due to the fact we manufacture everything in house it gives us the ability to offer customers exactly what they require. This hopper drops through the floor and is discharged by an AR elevator which then feeds the control chute situated above the mill. This controls the even flow of grain across the rolls in the mill and the inspection hatch allows any unwanted material to be removed from the system.
The mill installed for this project is the AR 2000/450/2. This is a precision two roll mill with a milling capacity of two tonnes per hour. The induction hardened solid steel rolls have a hardness of 59 Rockwell. This makes them incredibly long lasting. During the malting season the malt grain may vary in size, but with the instant roll adjustability, enabled by the dual analogue dials, maximum extract from the malt can still be achieved. Rapid and reliable product testing is enabled by the integrated sample tube. The natural balance of the mill coupled with the belt drive system makes any AR precision mill extremely quiet in operation. Safety is of paramount importance in everything we do which is why our mills are completely enclosed and all mechanical parts are totally guarded.
With the mill having crushed the malt to such exacting standards, it is very important the grist is handled gently from now on. We used our AR elevator which has been purpose designed for gentle grist handling to transport grist up through the floor and fill the five tonne capacity grist case. Again manufactured by us in galvanised steel plate. A mashing pump has been fitted to the outlet of the grist case ready to transport malt to the next stage of the brewing process.
